Opposite the Africa Mercy in the Port of Dakar, the government of Senegal formally welcomed the Global Mercy, the newest vessel to the Mercy Ships fleet.

During the ceremony the Global Mercy was declared ready for its inaugural field service when Dr. Juliette Tuakli smashed a vase of flowers on the ship’s hull. Five hundred members of the Mercy Ships community sang and danced to celebrate the historic milestone.

Mercy Ships marked more than 30 years of service in Africa with a week full of celebrations in Senegal. First was a remarkable moment, when the Global Mercy made her first voyage to Africa and arrived in Dakar. Hundreds of thousands of lives will be transformed through surgery during the ship’s lifespan, and thousands more medical professionals will be trained in Africa.

Second, African leaders joined Senegal’s President H.E Macky Sall in the ship’s official inauguration, where they also approved a strategic roadmap to improve surgical care in Africa.

Finally, the week built to a special moment as crew, Mercy Ships leaders, partners, and guests came together in song and dance to bless the new hospital ship.

Thank you for journeying with us this far, here’s to another 30 years of service.
