Anaesthetic Assistant

This is an unpaid volunteer role on board the Africa Mercy or Global Mercy, hospital ships serving those in need in sub-Saharan Africa by providing free, life-saving surgeries and strengthening health care systems.

Description

Assists anaesthesia staff in providing anaesthetic care. Maintain inventory of anaesthetic related materials. Maintain anaesthetic equipment in conjunction with Biomedical Technician. Reorders anaesthetic supplies to keep the Operating Room sufficiently stocked. 

The Anaesthetic Assistant volunteer position, part of the Hospital, will be located on the Africa Mercy or Global Mercy, the world’s largest non-governmental hospital ships. The preferred minimum time commitment for this role is two weeks.

Qualifications Required:

  • Minimum two years’ experience as a Certified Registered Nurse Anaesthetist, Nurse Anaesthetist, Registered Nurse with relevant Anaesthesia Assistant experience, Aesthetic Technician, or Registered Operating Department Practitioner or equivalent Aesthetic Assistant qualification 
  • Airway management (mask ventilation, intubation, LMA placement) and IV cannulation skills helpful, but not required 
  • Knowledge of sterile technique 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, excellent organisational skills 
  • Fluent in English
