In my new role as Ambassador for Mercy Ships, I’ve had the privilege of meeting some truly remarkable people who support our mission. Time and time again, I’ve found myself thinking, “You absolutely have to meet this other supporter I just spoke with!”
I’ve always believed that a strong sense of community and belonging is essential for our well-being. It’s not only one of life’s greatest joys, it’s also proven to support good health and extend the quality of our lives. When you find a group of people with rare but shared values, it adds such richness and depth to life.
So, I began hosting group morning coffees to bring our supporters together in community, and right from the start, it felt like kindred spirits connecting. The conversations were natural, uplifting, and genuinely rejuvenating. I hope to host three or four of these each year.
Some of our professional supporters, who have highly demanding roles, have also asked me to organise occasional after-work drinks, just a couple of relaxed hours to unwind and connect with other kind-hearted, intelligent, successful, and globally minded individuals.
Fair warning: the travel stories are next-level. My personal favourite so far? A petite, very ladylike woman who once rode on the roof of a bus through Pakistan sitting on pumpkins, survived an avalanche in Tajikistan, and sat knitting with Iraqi women in a tent (as diversion therapy) while Mosul was being bombed. These are not your average catch-ups!
That said, a wild travel story is definitely not a prerequisite for coming, honestly, who could top that? But being around people like this is truly inspiring. They’re as fascinating and awe-inspiring as astronauts flying to the moon. Just extraordinary.
There’s no agenda, no fundraising, and no pressure, just meaningful connection and genuine camaraderie. Community is everything to me.
